_____________________________________________________________________ Understanding Bols Striking the different parts of the tabla using different fingers creates distinct notes or tones called "Bols". In order to learn the traditional method of playing the tabla the student must learn to play and recite the "Bols". These Bols are arranged to create rhythmical patterns or compositions and one must learn to recite and play these Bols and compositions correctly in order to truly understand and properly learn to play the tabla. A number of distinct Bols can be played with each hand as well as combination Bols created using both hands together.
